Discussing students’ thinking and perspectives for improving teaching: An analysis of teachers’ reflection in post-lesson discussions in lesson study cycles

Abstract Lesson study is a Japanese concept to improve teaching and learning mathematics through particular form of activity in which group teachers works collaboratively plan, implement, observe, reflect on the proposed research lessons. Although lesson internationally acknowledged as providing key opportunities for teachers, there limited information post-lesson discussion its contribution toward teachers’ professional growth. This has aim describing features discussions. An entire at public elementary school Japan participated three cycles. During each cycle, were invited write down what they believed was significant planned their comments regarding lessons, discussion. The writings collected analyzed. method helped capture ‘voices’ better compared recordings oral results analyses revealed that major part discussions involved issues related pedagogies, reflections tended focus more students’ thinking mathematical topics over time cycles proceeded. suggested growth can be recognition importance understanding perspectives mathematics, order teaching.
